Ho'oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian healing and spiritual shamanic practice often referred to as the Hawaiian Code of Forgiveness. It means to make (ho'o) right (pono) right (pono). In other words, make right, really right and bring balance back into our lives and our relationships with others.

It is based on the premise that the world is our creation, reflects back to us what is happening inside us, and is therefore our responsibility, 100%. If we are experiencing upset or imbalance, the place to look is inside ourselves, not outside at the people we perceive as causing our problem.

“They” don't exist, in a manner of speaking, except as projections from inside us. The problem isn't with “them”, it is within us, and to change “them”, we have to change ourselves. We do this by healing ourselves, which, through Ho'oponopono, involves loving ourselves. In loving ourselves, we energetically evoke the spirit of love to heal within ourselves what was creating the outer circumstance.

Dr. Hew Len, a psychologist in Hawaii who worked as a psychotherapist at Hawaii State Hospital for the criminally insane, never met with any patients in session because he knew that his seeing them as insane was due to his own projections. He therefore asked “What is it within me that causes me to experience these people as insane?” As he worked to heal himself, all but two patients had left the hospital and it was closed after two years. To heal oneself, he suggests saying over and over again, “I'm sorry” and “I love you" – as a way to love oneself and heal one’s relationship with “another”, regardless of the circumstances. Another interpretation: To say over and over again “I'm sorry”, “Please forgive me”, “I love you", “Thank you”.

“I'm sorry” – I am sorry for bringing to this situation whatever is going on in me that I experience the world this way.

“Please forgive me” – Please forgive me for whatever is going on in me that I experience the world in me this way. By asking for forgiveness, we are asking the Divine to help us forgive ourselves for whatever we brought to ourselves.

“I love you" – I love all and everything as an expression of the Divine. This transmutes the energy from stuck to flowing. It reconnects us to the Divine. Since the zero state is one of pure love, and has zero limits, we begin to experience that state by expressing love.

“Thank you” – It is done. So be it. When we make this statement, we are expressing gratitude. We are showing our faith that the issue will be resolved for the highest good of all concerned.

What happens next is up to the Divine. We may be inspired to take action of some sort. Whatever it is, do it. If we aren't sure about the action to take, use this same healing method on our confusion. When we are clear, we'll know what to do.

Loving ourselves is the greatest way to heal ourselves, and as we heal ourselves, we heal our world. By saying "I love you", we somehow heal within ourselves what was creating “them”.

In short, there is no out there. All is within us and what we see is a mirror image of what we bring to any waking moment. Whenever we want to improve anything in our lives, there's only one place to look: inside ourselves. As we do, as we take 100% responsibility for All that we experience, we regain our power and authority to shift any situation by shifting our thoughts. We are the authority of both the cause and the cure. There is no one else, there is nothing else.

By bringing peace to ourselves, we bring peace to the world.

“The world is not being done TO you; the world is being done BY you. The world is not coming AT you; it is coming FROM you. When you go to a position of being “at cause” instead of being “at effect”, then you are no longer a victim.” – Gary Renard

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” - Wayne Dyer

“Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.”
